More than 350 metric tonnes of paper and paperboard were produced globally in 2005, an increase of 9% over 2000. Printing & writing paper production increased 6%, while newsprint production declined overall by 3%. The greatest surge was in papers for packaging which, together with tissue, increased 13% from 2000 to 2005.

Europe produced 38% of the world's printing & writing papers, with North America producing 27% and Asia rapidly increasing its share to 29%. (Australia, South America and South Africa produced the rest.)
